Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
