The Kindness of Strangers: How a Man I Barely Knew Supported Me Obtain the Position That Altered My Path

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to Europe with a friend. Since my companion was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had arranged a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a big ten-floor structure on the UWS called International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and began chatting with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I explained that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at the university – adjacent to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I ought to seek a position with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The Iraqi student approached me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his identity, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the bravery or nerve to reach out at an prestigious college and request employment. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that job in New York paved the way for a job in Zurich where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
