Defense Department Investigation Finds Hegseth Put Military Personnel in Danger with Signal Conversation.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by disclosing classified information in a private Signal group, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Incident

The chat group in dispute included particulars about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the chat allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not authorized for handling sensitive material.

Serious Risk to Troops

The inspector general's report determined that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US troops if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the information he shared, though it was not specified whether he actually did so.

Secretary's Reaction

The informed individual said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have risked lives or compromised the operation. He added that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and viewed the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been provided to Congress. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be made public in the coming days.
